Kodiak & Kodiak-X Course Syllabuses

Kodiak Syllabus, #34193

The Kodiak syllabus, item no. 34193, is available through council in a convient size and spiral bound.  Great for training!  You can also download a full size PDF file:  March 2007 printing with Materials List update, Sept. 2007, 437 KB.  This online syllabus is useful for the handouts since you can select pages to print.  However, be aware that the page numbers do not correspond.

The order form for the Kodiak syllabus and other course items is listed under Kodiak Files on Venturing Links.

Kodiak X Syllabus, #34106

The Kodiak X syllabus, item no. 34106, is restricted because the course is offered only by councils.  Councils must order this syllabus.  This syllabus is full size and is designed for putting in a notebook.

The order form for the Kodiak X syllabus and other course items is listed under Kodiak Files on Venturing Links.

Kodiak may be run at any level (crew, district, or council), but must be approved by the Council Scout Executive.  Most courses will be offered at the council level to maximize participants, facilities, resources, support, etc.  However, the course could be run by a crew going on any outdoor trek that last at least 6 days where an hour or two a day would be available to teach the course.

The Kodiak syllabus can be used by anyone putting on a course providing they follow the basic course requirements:

  1. All Kodiak Treks (courses) must use and follow the official Kodiak Syllabus.
  2. Courses must be approved by the Council Scout Executive in advance of the course.
  3. Courses should be financially self-sustaining.
  4. There is no maximum course size, but each team should be no larger than 8 (6 to 8 is ideal size) for each two instructors.  Under 5 in a team is challenging (not enough to do exercises).
  5. At least six days is required to do the course.  Either six straight days or two weekends (Friday-Sunday).
  6. If you choose to offer the two-weekend style course, no more than one weekend should divide the two weekends.  (Too much time will cause lose of continuity.)
  7. All commissions must be presented.
